Thanks to all of you who shared the “growing pains” that you’re going through right now. I love to hear your stories. Again, feel free to comment on this post if you have some “growing pain” moments to share.
Okay, so my follow-up Friday is still a work in progress. My goal is to “follow-up” on my posts from earlier in the week and hopefully provide some useful information. We’ll see how it goes
The Cautious Fish
That would be our 5 year old son. We are in the midst of learning how to swim. It’s slow going. But, we trudge on because I feel strongly that he should learn how to swim. Surely every child should acquire this life skill, right? I certainly think so. I just hope that soon we cross over from tears and apprehension to fun. You know, I envision summers spent poolside with my very able little fish splashing around…I guess all in due time.
So here’s your “follow-up Friday” safety tidbit: The American Academy of Pediatrics has a drowning prevention guide. It outlines their recommendations for keeping youngsters safe in and around water. Really can’t hear or read this enough. Here’s the direct link for you : http://aap.org/advocacy/releases/may2410studies.htm#drowning
The Super Chick
“Safe side super chick” actually and I have grown quite fond of her. She is the quirky star of an amazing stranger safety DVD that a friend recommended to us. It’s called The Safe Side: Stranger Safety, John Walsh is one of the co-founders. My son keeps asking to watch it over and over again. It has definitely helped to reinforce our message. Be forewarned, it’s super silly but I’m pretty sure that’s why it works for the 4-7 year old crowd.
The one caveat: our 2 year old now runs around yelling “it’s not my mom, it’s not my dad!”. We’re going to have to start carrying around proof that she is in fact ours! Hence, this is a good video for ages 4 and older

Be safe and have a wonderful Friday!
BTW: My blog is in the midst of a make-over so it may look a little different until my final product is ready…I can’t wait!
We should pick up that DVD. It's been pointed out to us that our daughter has “never met a stranger”. She believes that strangers are “friends you haven't met yet” and other such nonsense. I love that she's friendly, but having some caution will be good too.
I know, don't you wish she could keep that friendly innocence forever? It's so sweet. I like the dvd b/c it's silly but has some very serious messages.
Hi! I'm stopping by via SITS! Nice blog!
Hi! I'm stopping by via SITS! Nice blog!
I'm terrified to the point of panic for my youngest daughter to be around water. Just the other day she got in shallow water at the neighborhood pool (with a life jacket) and fell forward and couldn't get turned back up. (She is 3.5.) I was right there, but I keep thinking about what if I hadn't been or hadn't been watching for a second?!?! I literally never take my eyes off my kids when we are near water.

Wow Dawn thanks for sharing. It really is frightening and I'm so glad you were right there, really makes us more aware about really being within arms reach. I've had a similiar expereince with my 2.5 yr old in a wading pool. Thanks for stopping by, now off to give you a visit too
The video sounds great! I have a two year old that repeats things too. We will wait until he is bigger. Stopping from Saturday Sharefest at SITS!
Thanks for stopping by, Yes the video is for ages 4 and older. My son who is 5 loves to watch it and has learned quite a bit.
That thing about your daughter saying you aren't her parents? Over here from my side that's pretty funny! I'm sure you're not so amused though. Thanks for the link to the water safety thing. My boys are learning to swim right now, so it's really helpful. By the way, I don't know why, but I hate it when people say what I'm about to say but I popped over from the LBS tea party. I want you to know that I love your blog and I love having professional wisdom at my fingertips, so look for me to be back often. Thanks!
